1987 NBA ECF Pistons at Celtics Game 5 (4 of 5)

***If you want to watch a video in high quality put this at the end of the video's internet address (url) &fmt=18 *** The infamous game where Larry Bird steals Isiah Thomas's inbounds pass and passes to Dennis Johnson to snatch victory away from Detroit. Larry Bird finds a way to win. I want to show what led to that point. To provide a little context. I want to show just how testy this series had become. The Pistons were supposed to be a bump in the road as the Celtics made their annual trip to the NBA Finals. Detroit never got the memo. Boston won the first two games. Then Detroit manhandled the Celtics in Games 3 and 4 -- tying the series at 2 apiece. By game 5, the Pistons had the Celtics full undivided attention. Along the way, there were fights, skirmishes and sadly for Boston, a significant injury (Robert Parish). Clearly, Boston needed this game more than the Pistons did. The Pistons were younger, fresher, had a deeper more productive bench and were healthier. If the Celtics had lost this game, the Pistons would have won in 6. But Larry Bird found a way...

Black Male Lessons from Joe Louis: Black Scholar Dr Watkins

On the June 24th broadcast of the ESPN Show, "Outside The Lines," a comparison was made between NBA Star, Shaquille Oneal's recent freestyle-session and Shock-Jock, Don Imus's latest racial tirade. This parallel by ESPN is very disturbing, as a satirical skit by a ball-player - aimed at a fellow ball-player - bears no resemblance to such hate-filled and vitriol-imbued remarks, as that of Don Imus on Monday, June 23, 2008. As expected, FOX News "analyst," Juan Williams, was present to entertain and congratulate the idea. Herbie Hancock - Rockit

"Rockit" is a hit song recorded by Herbie Hancock. It was released as a single from his 1983 album Future Shock. The song was written by Hancock, bass guitarist Bill Laswell and synthesizer/drum machine programmer Michael Beinhorn. Constructed and composed during the recording process at various studios, including Martin Bisi's in Brooklyn NY, "Rockit" was perhaps the first popular single to feature scratching and other turntablist techniques, performed by Grand Mixer D.ST - an influential DJ in the early years of turntablism - using turntables as a musical instrument. Many later turntablists have cited "Rockit" as revelatory, inspiring their interest in the instrument. The single was a major radio hit in the United Kingdom but more of an underground hit in the United States. The humorous music video, directed by duo Godley & Creme and featuring robot-like sculptures (by Jim Whiting) moving in time to the music, was among the earliest videos to feature African Americans on MTV and garnered five MTV Video Music Awards in 1984, including Best Concept Video and Best Special Effects. Hancock himself appears and plays keyboard only as an image on a television, which is smashed on the sidewalk in the closing shot. In 1985 at the Grammy Awards, Hancock performed "Rockit" in a synthesizer jam which also featured Thomas Dolby, Howard Jones and Stevie Wonder. In 1986 it was featured in the Soviet film The Courier alongside a hip hop dance sequence making it one of the songs to introduce hip-hop to the USSR. The song was later remixed by V-Video, an early Russian video company, to be played with its logo. It is also featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and is included in its soundtrack box-set. The song was also used in the movies Zoolander and Kickin' It Old Skool. It is also used in the video game NBA Street: Homecourt when a gamebreaker move is activated. A remix of "Rockit" is one of the playable songs in the PlayStation 2 game Amplitude. It also appears in The Simpsons episode Treehouse of Horror XVI. "Rockit" lends its name to a range of vintage stores in London, as well as a Toronto music venue. "Rockit" has also been featured in numerous commercials. The comedian-pundit Stephen Colbert has used 'Rockit' on his television show The Colbert Report, usually in conjunction with a video of conservative radio broadcaster Rush Limbaugh mocking the involuntary convulsions of Parkinson's sufferer Michael J. Fox.

Vintage NBA - Tom Heinsohn

In 1956, Heinsohn was chosen as the Boston Celtics 'regional', or 'territorial', draft pick. In his first season, Heinsohn played in an NBA All-Star Game, was named the NBA Rookie of the Year, and won his first championship ring. He was part of a Celtics squad that won eight NBA titles in nine years, including eight in a row between 1959 and 1966. In NBA history, only teammates Bill Russell and Sam Jones won more championship rings during their playing careers. During his playing career, Heinsohn was named to six All-Star teams. On the day his teammate and fellow Holy Cross Crusader Bob Cousy retired, Heinsohn scored his 10,000th career point. His number 15 was retired by the Celtics in 1965.

NBA's 60 Greatest Playoff Moments: #4

The defending champion Boston Celtics were down and almost out. Playing the young, tough-as-nails Detroit Pistons in the 1987 Eastern Conference Finals, the aging Celtics were in danger of losing Game 5, which would have given the Pistons a chance to clinch the series at home in Game 6. With Boston down by a point and Detroit in possession of the ball in the closing seconds of the game, those famed Celtic leprechauns decided to make an appearance. As Detroit's Isiah Thomas prepared to toss the ball inbounds from the sideline, Boston's Larry Bird looked away from his man and stole a glance at Thomas. He saw the Pistons' captain look toward center Bill Laimbeer in the low post an instant before releasing the ball. So Bird cut into the passing lane and stole the ball before it could reach Laimbeer's hands. His momentum looked like it would carry him out of bounds, but Bird somehow managed to gather his balance at the baseline and turn toward the court, where he spotted teammate Dennis Johnson beginning his cut from the foul line toward the basket. Bird whipped a crisp pass to DJ who laid it in with one second remaining for a 108-107 victory. The steal was remarkable. Bird's instinct and ability to turn it into the winning basket only compounded the greatness of the play. "Larry's mind takes an instant picture of the whole court," noted Bill Fitch, Bird's first coach with the Celtics. "He sees creative possibilities." The Celtics went on to win the series in seven games and advance to the NBA Finals for the fourth year in a row, where they would surrender their title to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games.

Boston Celtics and St Louis Hawks Rivalry

With acquisitions in the draft and free agency, the Hawks became one of the league's top teams. In 1957, the team advanced to the 1957 NBA Finals, losing to the Boston Celtics in a double-overtime thriller in game seven. In 1958, the Hawks again advanced to the NBA Finals under coach Alex Hannum and captured their only NBA Championship in game 6 against the Celtics. The Hawks remained one of the NBA's premier teams for the next decade. In 1960, under coach Ed Macauley, the team advanced to the Finals yet again, but lost—again to the Celtics—in yet another game seven thriller. The following year, with the acquisition of rookie Lenny Wilkens, the Hawks repeated their success, but met the Celtics in the Finals again and lost in five games.
