Allen Iverson 21pts, Kleiza Buzzer Beater vs Kings 07/08 NBA

Iverson helps fuel Nuggets' rally past Kings in fourth The Kings had just completed a successful road trip that Reggie Theus thought raised their confidence. Then, a meltdown of major proportions. Linas Kleiza recovered the ball in a scramble and hit a jumper just before the final buzzer sounded, lifting the Denver Nuggets to a thrilling 106-105 victory over Sacramento on Sunday night. "If it doesn't hurt, then you're brain dead," Theus said. "It's supposed to hurt or you don't care. It's supposed to sting." The Kings kept giving Denver extra chances, like when Brad Miller bricked two free throws with 16.5 seconds left. After Allen Iverson drove and missed from close, Marcus Camby tipped the ball and Kleiza got possession, hitting the shot from the left wing while falling away under pressure. "I just looked up at the clock and saw it was two seconds left, shot it up and it went in," Kleiza said. Carmelo Anthony had 30 points and 12 rebounds, Camby added 19 points, 14 boards and three blocked shots, and Iverson had his streak of four straight 30-point performances end, finishing with 21. But Iverson, who shot just 6-for-21, almost single-handedly brought the Nuggets back. His layin off his own steal with 9:13 to play pulled the Nuggets within 93-87, then he hit a 3-pointer at the 3:24 mark that made it 101-97. His three-point play with 2:10 left cut Sacramento's lead to 103-100. "I was having such a bad game that I thought I hit the last shot," Iverson said. "'K' hit that shot and I was forever smiling. That was a lucky shot." Ron Artest scored 24 points and a key basket with 2:29 remaining, and also had nine rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Miller added 22 points, eight boards and four assists, but the Kings couldn't overcome their errors in crunch time. Camby traveled with 1:10 to go and his team down by one, and Beno Udrih swished a 12-footer on the other end moments later. Kleiza missed a 3 on Denver's next possession and Anthony's rebound attempt went off his hand out of bounds, giving Sacramento the ball back with 37.8 seconds on the clock. Udrih missed two free throws with 36.5 seconds remaining as the Nuggets got another chance, needing a timeout at 22 seconds after Iverson was trapped along the sideline. Anthony drove past Artest for a basket to make it 105-104 and Sacramento took timeout. Sacramento had won three of its last four during a recent five-game road swing -- scoring more than 100 points in each of those victories. The Kings were rolling in this one, too. They led by as many as 16, but shot 8-for-18 in the fourth quarter and didn't defend in the paint -- not to mention nearly doubling their turnovers with seven of Sacramento's 15 coming in the final 12 minutes. "This one hurts. We've got to put it behind us somehow," guard Francisco Garcia said. "I don't remember in the last three years one that hurts like this. We were playing so good, too." Artest made his first five shots with a 3-pointer to score 11 of his team's first 20 points. He also had two rebounds and an assist in the opening four minutes as Sacramento built an early 10-point lead. Nuggets coach George Karl shook up his lineup, going with Yakhouba Diawara to defend Artest, who himself drew the tough defensive challenge in Anthony. Eduardo Najera was soon moved onto Artest, and Anthony also took part. Artest shot 10-for-16 but was held to two points in the fourth. "It's good for our team to win this type of game," Karl said. "We don't play very well, then steal one on the road while we are short-handed, shows a lot of good things to me." Sacramento hit 11 of its first 16 shots, had seven assists leading to those baskets and didn't commit its first turnover until Quincy Douby's offensive foul at the 8:14 mark of the second quarter. Sacramento had eight first-half steals to none for Denver and led 66-51 at the break despite being outrebounded 27-23. The Kings were outboarded 53-46 overall. "That's a pretty good Christmas present for those guys," Theus said. "We outplayed them. We missed free throws down the stretch -- that's the bottom line." Camby started the game after Karl had expected him to sit. He missed Friday's game at Portland with a contusion in the middle of his back sustained the previous night against Houston. The Nuggets were coming off a 99-96 loss to the Trail Blazers in which they were outscored 30-20 in the fourth quarter after heading into the final period up 76-69 -- but changed the outcome this time. Denver's Kenyon Martin missed his second straight game with a strained right hamstring, which he injured Thursday at home against Houston.

Lakers - Kings 114-92 [Bryant 29pts vs Martin 22pts]

SACRAMENTO, Calif., April 6, 2008 (AP) - Kobe Bryant's injured finger is no problem, as he proved while waving goodbye to Sacramento. Pau Gasol is doing fine on his sprained ankle, and Derek Fisher's right foot isn't slowing him down. Even Vladimir Radmanovic's head is screwed on straight as the healing Los Angeles Lakers roll toward the playoffs. Bryant scored 29 points, Radmanovic matched his season high with 21 and the Lakers stayed on track for the Pacific Division title with a 114-92 victory over the Kings on Sunday night. Radmanovic hit five 3-pointers and tied his career high with 14 rebounds after a pleading pregame pep talk from coach Phil Jackson, while Gasol added 20 points and nine rebounds as the Lakers won their fourth straight. The Lakers' easy victory over an exhausted opponent wasn't a surprise, even though another new injury popped up before the game for a team with more than its share. Luke Walton sat out with a strained right hamstring, yet Radmanovic seamlessly filled his minutes with good rebounding and an acumen for tough shots - including last-second scores at the end of the first and third quarters. "We've been looking for some consistency,' Jackson said of his enigmatic Serbian swingman. "We need him to play well, and we want to have some idea of what's going to happen, and whether we can depend on him.' Jackson said he's repeatedly suggested Radmanovic should talk to the Lakers' team psychologist to get to the bottom of his inconsistent effort: "You really need someone to get in there and work on your head.' But Radmanovic was his usual madcap self after the game, joking that he and Jackson had done their own pregame version of "Anger Management,' referencing the film starring Lakers fan Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler. Whatever the cause, the results showed up in his best game of the season. Lamar Odom, who's 19-of-22 in his last two games, had 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists as the Lakers snapped their longtime rivals' four-game winning streak with an outstanding second half, with Bryant scoring 14 points and hitting three 3-pointers in the first 6:02 after halftime. Los Angeles has won four straight in Sacramento. Although the Lakers still trail New Orleans by 1 1/2 games for the Western Conference lead, the win pushed Los Angeles (53-24) - which has the same record as San Antonio - two games ahead of Phoenix (51-26) in the Pacific standings with five games to play. The Lakers have 18 division titles, but none since 2004, Shaquille O'Neal's last season with the club. "I'll watch a little bit, mostly out of curiosity,' Bryant said of the extent of his scoreboard-watching. "We want to be No. 1 just for the sake of being No. 1, but it ultimately doesn't matter because wherever you finish in the West, you're going to have a tough matchup.' Kevin Martin scored 22 points for the Kings, who simply seemed exhausted after winning at Denver one night earlier. "We ran out of gas,' Martin said. "They came in here with some rested legs. We played a hard-fought game last night with only seven or eight players. You can't always say that's an excuse, but you can just tell we ran out of gas.' Bryant drew cheers from the thousands of Lakers fans who infiltrated Arco Arena to start "MVP!' chants during the third-quarter run. Radmanovic added eight points in the third, including two 3-pointers. After Sacramento's reserves cut the lead to 12 points, Bryant hit one last 3-pointer with 2:45 to play, putting the Lakers up 110-88 - and Kobe then waved goodbye to the Sacramento crowd as he ran back downcourt. "The best player in the league came out and just took over,' Martin said. "He got his team going.' The Kings were brought down off their high from upsetting the Nuggets on Saturday night despite playing without injured starters Ron Artest, Brad Miller and Beno Udrih. Artest returned but struggled to 19 points on 7-of-20 shooting against the Lakers, while Miller missed his second straight game with a lower leg strain. "Fatigue is not a factor in the NBA,' Artest claimed. "The (second unit) played great. It was good for their confidence. They will be that much more experienced and ready.' Notes: Barry Bonds sat courtside with Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof, waving his black baseball cap to the crowd during the first timeout, and he waved again to another ovation as he left early in the fourth quarter. "I love Barry Bonds,' Artest said. ... Martin made his 482nd free throw of the season late in the third quarter, breaking his own Sacramento record for free throws made. ... Walton injured his hamstring against the Trail Blazers last week. He hopes to play at Portland on Tuesday.

Kings - Lakers 101-124 [Douby 32pts vs Gasol 22pts]

LOS ANGELES, April 15, 2008 (AP) - The Los Angeles Lakers began the season in chaos 5 1/2 months ago. They finished it as the Western Conference champions. Pau Gasol had 22 points, leading MVP candidate Kobe Bryant added 20, and the Lakers beat the short-handed Sacramento Kings 124-101 Tuesday night to clinch the No. 1 seed in the West and home-court advantage throughout the conference playoffs. "I told the guys to celebrate, have a good time for two days,' Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We're back to business Thursday.' The Lakers (57-25) begin the playoffs this weekend - most likely Sunday - against Denver or Dallas. It will be the Nuggets unless they beat Memphis and Dallas loses to No. 2 seed New Orleans on Wednesday night. If the Hornets win, they'll have the same record as the Lakers, but Los Angeles wins the tiebreaker because of a better conference record. The Lakers enter the playoffs having gone 8-1 to finish the regular season. "It's all about momentum,' Bryant said. "You want to be playing your best basketball going into the playoffs, and we feel like we're doing that so we ended the season exactly where we wanted to.' The Lakers were 3-0 against Denver this season and 3-1 against Dallas. "Whoever we face, we're going to have our hands full,' said Bryant, mindful of the strength and depth in the West, where as many as eight teams could finish with at least 50 victories. "No matter who you match up with in the West, it's going to be tough.' Gasol shot 9-of-11 before coming out of the game for good with 2:38 left in the third quarter, and Bryant joined him on the bench moments later after having shot just 3-of-13. But he went 13-of-14 from the foul line. Lamar Odom added 15 points and 12 rebounds, Vladimir Radmanovic scored 14 points, Jordan Farmar added 13, and Ronny Turiaf had 10 points and six assists for the Lakers, who went strictly with reserves in the fourth quarter. Quincy Douby led the Kings (38-44) with a career-high 32 points. Beno Udrih scored 22 points, Francisco Garcia added 15 and Shelden Williams had 12 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. The Kings played their final game of the season without their top three scorers: Kevin Martin, Ron Artest and Brad Miller. Artest, who has a sprained left thumb, missed the final two games after scoring 22 points in a 94-91 victory over New Orleans on Saturday night, a triumph that opened the door for the Lakers to win the West. "We fought through a lot of adversity, a lot of injuries,' Kings coach Reggie Theus said. "(The Lakers) definitely understood that this was a team that had come in here once before and beat them. This was a game they really needed, and they played like they should have. They are a great basketball team. It will be interesting to see what will happen in the playoffs. They have the potential in that locker room to do it all.' The Lakers overcame injuries to up-and-coming center Andrew Bynum and backup forward Trevor Ariza to win the West after a 9-8 start. Bynum (left knee) hasn't played since Jan. 13, and Ariza (right foot) has been sidelined since being injured a week later. There's no timetable on their return. The acquisition of Gasol from Memphis on Feb. 1 has paid huge dividends. The Lakers are 22-5 with the 7-footer in their lineup. Gasol returned earlier this month after missing nine games because of a sprained ankle. Reserves Farmar, Turiaf and Sasha Vujacic showed significant improvement between last season and this one. Gasol has never played on a team that has won a playoff game, much less a series. "I'm not really looking, thinking about the past, just focusing on what we've got here, an opportunity to do something great,' he said. "It doesn't stop here.' Bryant, regarded as one of the NBA's best players for several years but without an MVP award in 11 previous seasons, called the Lakers' front office a mess and demanded a trade last spring in the wake of the team's failure to win a playoff series for the third straight year. After things calmed down, team owner Dr. Jerry Buss said during training camp he was listening to offers, angering Bryant again. Trade talk was a constant for the first weeks of the season, but Bryant said recently this has been his most satisfying year because of the relationship he's had with his teammates. Bryant said he didn't believe the Lakers could win the West last summer, but added: "We talked about it in training camp, our goal was to win the championship. It's been a great turnaround. We all feel very good about it. We're excited about it. We're all very proud of each other. There's still a lot of work to be done.'

Toronto Raptors vs Sacramento Kings Mar.16/08

A night after being blown out by 28 points, the Sacramento Kings were happy to get a win no matter how ugly it looked. Kevin Martin scored 32 points and had eight rebounds to help the Kings rebound for a 106-100 victory over the struggling Toronto Raptors. Ron Artest added 19 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Kings, who won for the third time in four games despite 22 turnovers that led to 22 Toronto points. "It wasn't textbook, but the guys came up with a victory," Kings coach Reggie Theus said. "We did what we had to do down the stretch." Scoreless through three quarters, Carlos Delfino hit a three-pointer and then made two free throws, pulling Toronto within one point with 2:59 remaining. The Kings, who lost 127-99 to Phoenix on Saturday, went on a 6-0 run. Artest made a tough fallaway jumper, Martin connected on a corner jumper and Brad Miller converted two free throws to put Sacramento ahead 98-91 with 1:35 left. Two jumpers by Jason Kapono brought the Raptors to within three points twice in the final 23 seconds, but Martin made three free throws and Artest made a layup off an inbounds pass with 10.9 seconds left to put the Kings ahead 104-98. Kapono scored 26 points off the bench for the Raptors, who have lost four straight and five of six. Rasho Nesterovic added 20 points and eight rebounds for Toronto. "We've got to get five, six, seven players playing well at the same time," Toronto coach Sam Mitchell said. "One night, it's a couple of guys. The next night, it's a couple of different guys. We need a few more people playing better." Mikki Moore scored 17 and had seven rebounds for the Kings. Beno Udrih had 15 points and seven assists, while Miller contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Raptors played their ninth straight game without all-star forward Chris Bosh, the team's leading scorer and rebounder, who's out with a sore right knee. Toronto is 2-7 during the stretch without Bosh and 4-10 overall this season without him. "He is an all-star, their best player, so that had a lot to do with the win tonight," said Artest, who said he had forgotten the Kings' 25-point loss in Toronto when Bosh had scored 31 points. The turnovers were prevalent all game for the Kings, who had 15 by halftime, many of them unforced. However, capitalizing on Toronto's small lineup at times, the Kings had a 50-35 rebounding edge. "It was a bad night there, that's way too many turnovers," said Udrih, who had six of them. "So the rebounding really helped us a lot." The Kings led 32-23 after one quarter and their fast start offensively was hardly surprising considering Toronto's recent defense. The Raptors had allowed their previous five opponents to shoot 54 per cent or better and were coming off a humiliating 137-105 loss Friday in Denver, allowing the fourth-most points in franchise history. It was the 10th straight loss at Arco Arena for the Raptors, who haven't left the building with a victory since March 13, 1997. Toronto is 0-4 on its current road trip, which concludes Monday night in Utah. "We've got to come out (against the Jazz) with a sense of urgency," Kapono said. "We've got to get back on track because it's playoff time. We can't go splitting games or going two or three games. We have to go in with the mind-set that we can win all five games." Martin ignited the Kings early in the third quarter with a pair of three-pointers during a 10-0 run. He scored 13 points in the third to help Sacramento take a 75-73 lead into the final period. Udrih scored 12 points and both Artest and Moore had 11 in the opening half for the Kings, who led by as many as 13. Led by the shooting of Kapono, who scored 16 points, the Raptors went on a 15-2 run and trailed 53-49 at the half. Notes: Geoff Petrie, the Kings' vice president of basketball operations, was scouting the SEC tournament at the Georgia Dome when the tornado hit Friday. Nesterovic and Kapono took nearly half of Toronto's 47 first-half shots. Kings rookie Spencer Hawes suffered a strained left foot against Phoenix and played only four minutes against the Raptors, while John Salmons missed the whole game with a sore ankle. Both are expected to play Tuesday against Golden State. The Raptors shot four free throws through three quarters and finished 8-of-13.

Kings - Lakers 114-113 [Bryant 26pts&Udrih 25pts]

LOS ANGELES, March 9, 2008 (AP) -- Beno Udrih made two free throws to put Sacramento up by a point with 4.6 seconds remaining. The Kings then watched nervously as Kobe Bryant took the final shot. His fadeaway jumper from 18 feet bounced off the rim at the buzzer. "Everybody always holds their breath when he has the chance to win it,' the Kings' Kevin Martin said Sunday after the Kings beat the Lakers 114-113. "John (Salmons) played it good and Mikki (Moore) came over the give him some help and fortunately for us, he came up short.' After a Lakers timeout, Bryant took the inbounds pass, try to drive, ran into a double-team roadblock and had to pull up and shoot. Sacramento's Ron Artest complimented his teammates' play and said, 'Wow, we just stepped up against the good team. It's unfortunate we can't step up against the bad teams.' The Kings were coming off a 111-103 loss to Minnesota on Friday, becoming only the third team this season to lose a home game to the Timberwolves. Udrih finished with 25 points and 10 assists for Sacramento, winning for just the second time in nine games in a stretch that included a defeat by the Lakers in Sacramento on Tuesday. Martin added 21 points and Artest had 17. Bryant scored 26, but had just six points on 1-of-7 shooting in the second half as the Lakers lost only their second in 15 games. He did not get many touches down the stretch, as Sasha Vujacic and Pau Gasol seemed as if they might pull the game out for the Lakers. Bryant said the Kings double-teamed him. "I'm OK. I'm moving on,' he said. "We'll make adjustments offensively.' The final seconds weren't necessarily the story of the game, Bryant said. "I think we lost this one from the onset - coming out with the right sense of purpose and execution,' he said. "I think it's a good wakeup call for us.' Both teams featured balanced scoring and not much defense, with the exception of the Kings' pressure on Bryant in the second half. Francisco Garcia had 15 points for Sacramento, and Moore and Spencer Hawes 14 apiece. Gasol's layup with 15 seconds left gave the Lakers a 113-112 lead, but Vujacic fouled Udrih and he calmly sank both free throws. Los Angeles, which trailed by as many as 13 early in the third quarter, chipped away at the lead and finally tied it at 100 on Gasol's running jumper midway through the fourth quarter. The Lakers' lone lead in the second half came on his layup with 15 seconds to play. Vujacic finished with 15 points, including going 3-of-4 from 3-point range. He hit several shots down the stretch to keep the Lakers close. Down 86-75 midway through the third quarter, Los Angeles closed the gap when Sacramento went a stretch of 4:18 without scoring. Derek Fisher's jumper narrowed the gap to 86-85 with 2:53 left in the period. Garcia's 3-pointer 4 minutes into the second quarter began a 17-5 run by the Kings that ended with another 3 by Garcia 4:06 before halftime and gave Sacramento a 58-45 lead. Martin, coming off a career-high 48-point performance in a 111-103 loss to Minnesota on Friday night, had 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting to help the Kings open their 71-60 halftime lead over the Lakers. Artest, back after missing two games with a sore left foot, had 13 points by the break and Udrih had 12. Bryant scored 20 in the first half, but just five as the Lakers fell behind in the second quarter. Notes: The Kings won for the sixth time in their last 11 games on the Lakers' court. ... The Lakers beat the Kings 117-105 in Sacramento last Tuesday, when Bryant scored 17 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter.

Kings-Nuggets 118-115 [Martin 36pts vs Anthony 47pts,11reb]

DENVER, April 5, 2008 (AP) - J.R. Smith was a one-man breakaway, his eyes widening as he sprang toward the basket, the ball rising over his head for a rim-rattling windmill dunk. Clank! It bounced off the iron and back toward halfcourt, the crowd moaning and coach George Karl nearly tipping over backward in his chair. That one play both epitomized the Nuggets' shoddy, senseless play Saturday night and ignited the short-handed Sacramento Kings to a surprising 118-115 win that dealt the Nuggets a blow to their playoff plans. "There's no reason for this team to come in here and beat us on our own floor, as good as we were playing on this floor,' Allen Iverson said after the Nuggets fell to 31-8 at home. "They were playing without their two best players. No reason for it. It's unacceptable.' Kevin Martin scored 36 points despite missing Sacramento's shootaround with the stomach flu and the Kings capitalized on Kenyon Martin's one-game suspension by getting 29 points from Francisco Garcia and 23 from Mikki Moore. "We didn't have a stopper mentality, a guy that could help us with those guys,' lamented Karl. The Kings, out of playoff contention and missing Ron Artest (thumb) and Brad Miller (leg), won their fourth straight game and snapped Denver's nine-game home winning streak. They took advantage of sloppy play and silly mistakes by the Nuggets, who got 47 points from Carmelo Anthony, two shy of his career high. Kevin Martin gave them more than they could have hoped for, sinking all 13 of his free throws and converting a trio of 3-pointers. "Kevin was not healthy,' Kings coach Reggie Theus said. "He played through it. His stomach was hurting. He didn't even make it to shooting practice. I wasn't sure I was even going to play him. Kevin said he wanted to play, and you saw the results.' Instead of moving into a seventh-place tie with Dallas, Denver fell into a tie with idle Golden State for the eighth and final playoff spot in the wild Western Conference. The Nuggets visit the Warriors on Thursday night in a game that's suddenly a must-win. "The sun will come up tomorrow and we're still tied,' Karl said. "We kind of gave back the little bit that we've earned. But giving up 118 points to that team was disappointing.' Artest was a late scratch with a strained left thumb, seemingly negating any advantage Sacramento might have had facing a Nuggets team without Kenyon Martin, who had to sit out after picking up his sixth flagrant foul of the season. Despite playing poorly, the Nuggets had a chance on their final possession to send the game into overtime. After a timeout with 4.3 seconds left, Smith inbounded the ball to Marcus Camby, who gave it right back, but Smith's 3-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the front of the iron and high off the backboard. "He's the best guy on our team making the tough 3, and with four seconds to go, you're probably going to get a tough 3,' Karl said. "And I've seen him make the shot he took.' Linas Kleiza started in place of Kenyon Martin and scored 28 points, 21 in the first 18 minutes, helping Denver take a 41-32 lead. The Nuggets looked as if they were going to cruise to an easy win even without K-Mart, by far their best player over the last 1 1/2 months. It was the Kings, however, who went to the locker room with a 59-56 lead behind 17 first-half points from their own K-Mart. "In the second quarter we lost our discipline, our mental direction,' Karl said. "We thought the game was going to be easy. J.R. missed a dunk and we kind of got sloppy with the basketball.' Iverson cringed as the Nuggets began to fritter away their early 12-point lead. "They just played better than us, and there's no reason for that. As serious as this game was, and the magnitude of this game, there's no reason for it,' he said. "I told 'Melo during the first half when they came back and took the lead and the momentum was going their way, I told him I didn't feel good about this game.' And now he doesn't feel so good about the Nuggets' tenuous hold on a playoff spot, either. "I'm definitely concerned if we're going to play like this,' Iverson said. "We've got to play better teams than them down the stretch. I'm confident, but, yeah, I'm concerned.' Notes: The Kings also were without G Beno Udrih (back). ... The Nuggets' only other home loss to a team with a losing record came on Nov. 27 against Indiana (112-110).

Kings - Warriors 132-140 [Davis 33pts,9ast vs Garcia 31pts]

OAKLAND, Calif., April 8, 2008 (AP) -- Another record-breaking offensive performance kept the Golden State Warriors neck-and-neck in the Western Conference's sprint to the playoffs. If the Warriors don't pick up the pace on defense, Don Nelson isn't sure they can win this race for eighth place. Baron Davis had 33 points and nine assists, Stephen Jackson added 20 points and the Warriors stayed in a tie with Denver for the West's final berth in their highest-scoring game of the season, a 140-132 win over the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night. Andris Biedrins had 17 points and 17 rebounds for the Warriors (47-31) as they kept pace in the power-packed West, where one club is certain to end up with the best record in NBA history for a non-playoff team. The Nuggets, who beat the Clippers 117-99, visit Golden State on Thursday night for a meeting that could determine the fates of the NBA's two highest-scoring teams. Nelson knows his team is another prototype of his long line of offensive juggernauts that play awfully small on the other end. The Warriors' strengths and deficiencies both were painfully obvious against the Kings, who also had their highest-scoring game of the season despite missing starters Ron Artest and Brad Miller. "It's hard to be disappointed when you win and you score 140 points, but we're going to have to start guarding people a lot better than we did tonight," Nelson said. "They have shot-makers, but it's hard to get a stop for us right now. ... I'm just going to accept this win as No. 47. We're probably going to need 50 to make the playoffs, or 51. I told our team we need to win them all." Al Harrington scored 17 points and Monta Ellis had 16 as Golden State scored 39 first-quarter points and never trailed in its third win in four games against its Northern California rivals -- but the Warriors' shoddy defense never allowed them to open a big lead, either. The Warriors warmed up for their showdown with Denver by putting on their usual offensive theatrics against Sacramento, including a 77-point first half. Davis had 20 points and eight assists as the Warriors racked up their highest-scoring 24 minutes of the season to take a lead they maintained throughout the second half, with C.J. Watson hitting a free throw in the final minute to push the Warriors to their highest point total this season. "We need to be a lot sharper, but a win is a win," Jackson said. "We can't hope for something to get us going. We have to go anyway. We knew we had to win. Guys are starting to feel that sense of urgency, [but] we just need to feel that as a whole." Francisco Garcia matched his career high with 31 points and Kevin Martin had 29 -- but just two in the fourth quarter -- for the Kings, who matched the Warriors' frenetic pace for much of an entertaining night. John Salmons added 22 points, but Sacramento is running out of healthy players in the final five games of its second straight season out of the playoffs. "To lose a game by eight that's a must-win situation for them -- in their building, with a depleted roster -- I'm very happy with how we played tonight," Kings coach Reggie Theus said. "You are watching [Garcia] and Kevin grow right in front of you. ... They're evolving in front of us, which is nice to see." Before the game, Sacramento shut down Miller for the rest of the season with injuries in his left leg and right elbow. Artest also missed the game with a sprained thumb, while Beno Udrih returned to uniform after missing seven games with a strained lower back. "If we could have rebounded better, we would have had a much better chance," Garcia said of the Kings' 48-31 rebounding deficit. "I'm proud of my guys. No matter who's out there on the floor, [we] just play hard. That's what the coach asks for, and when I'm out there I give it my all, and I want my teammates to do the same thing." Warriors swingman Mickael Pietrus returned from a nine-game absence with a strained right groin. He had 10 points in 13 minutes, but he brought down the house with a soaring block of Martin's layup attempt in the final minutes -- and he did it again with a two-handed rebound dunk moments later. Golden State, which already is assured of its best record since 1993-94, lost three of four games on a difficult road trip last week. But the Warriors, who snapped a 12-year playoff drought last spring, will finish the season with four of their last five games at home, where they've won eight of 10. Game notes Theus called a timeout 80 seconds into the game with his club down 6-0 after Mikki Moore got a technical foul for arguing. Moore eventually fouled out with just two points in 23 minutes. ... Davis and Nelson also got T's in the second quarter for arguing. ... Artest drew the Golden State crowd's ire for jumping up and pumping his fist to cheer on his teammates in the final minutes. Warriors fans booed him mercilessly.
