Allen Iverson 54pts vs Cleveland Cavaliers 2001 MVP Season

Allen Iverson keeps scoring and the Philadelphia 76ers keep winning. One night after a 41-point effort in Philadelphia's most lopsided win of the season, Iverson scored an NBA season-high and career-best 54 in a 107-103 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. "It was like he was playing horse tonight," said 76ers guard Aaron McKie, who had 20 points and nine assists. "His jumper was deadly." Using mostly jump shots, Iverson went 20-of-30 from the field. He also hit 10-of-13 free-throw attempts en route to his third career 50-point game and first since February 6 against Sacramento. "When your jumper is on, the basket seems like an ocean and the basketball seems like a rock," he said. "That is the way it felt tonight. "My teammates are the ones that set the screens for me and got me the ball in spots where I need the ball. My coach calls the plays and I wouldn't set a career high without those guys." The 1998-99 NBA scoring champion, Iverson broke his own Gund Arena record for points. He has fond memories of this building, having scored 50 points in a 125-118 loss in April 1997 after being named Most Valuable Player of the rookie game at All-Star Weekend that same year. "Coming here is something special because I remember I came in here and won the MVP of the rookie game in 1997," he said. "All I heard was boos and didn't understand it. I always look forward to coming back here to play in front of these people." The 76ers extended their winning streak to six games and improved the league's best record to 24-8. They have won eight straight on the road, three shy of a franchise record. Theo Ratliff chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds and nine blocks for Philadelphia, which was coming off Friday night's 121-89 home rout of Seattle. Despite Iverson's 54 points, the Sixers could not shake Cleveland, which closed within 103-99 on a three-point play by Lamond Murray with 67 seconds left but could not get any closer. "I thought our guys gave what they could," coach Randy Wittman said. "They ran into a guy that had it going tonight. I thought we gave a great effort but just couldn't overcome his 54 points." Andre Miller had 22 points and 14 assists for the Cavaliers, who have lost three straight and eight of nine after a six-game winning streak. The Cavs got within four points five times before Miller cappedthe scoring with a dunk, but the trio of Iverson, McKie and Ratliff foiled them each time. Murray's three-point play with 67 seconds left got Cleveland within four points but Ratliff followed with a 15-footer and Iverson added two free throws for a 107-99 lead with 22 seconds to play. Playing for the second straight night, the Sixers trailed 15-4 less than five minutes into the game. But Iverson scored eight points and Ratliff added six during an 18-6 run that gave Philadelphia a 27-25 lead after one period. The Sixers never trailed again, leading by as many as 11 points three times. Iverson, McKie and Ratliff combined for 26 of 29 Sixers points as they turned a 15-4 deficit into a 33-29 lead 3:15 into the second quarter. The lead hovered between five and 10 points until a layup by Rodney Buford made it 55-44 with 73 seconds to play in the first half. The Sixers took a 56-48 lead into the locker room behind Iverson's 28 points. Iverson scored Philadelphia's first 13 points of the third quarter on a trio of jumpers, a 3-pointer, a three-point play and a free throw for a 69-61 lead with 6 1/2 minutes left in the period. "He was amazing," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "He shot the ball as well as you can shoot it because there weren't a lot of easy shots. People had a hand in his face." "What a Larry Brown team does really well is spread the floor well for Allen," Cleveland guard Jim Jackson said. "It's really hard to stop a guy like that on the perimeter." The Cavs got within 72-69 on a basket by Miller with 2:59 left in the third but the Sixers never withered under the pressure, maintaining at least a four-point lead the rest of the way. Tyrone Hill scored nine points for Philadelphia, which shot 53 percent from the field (39-of-73) to overcome 21 turnovers. Iverson, McKie and Ratliff combined to go 31-of-52 from the floor. The Sixers also held a 42-39 edge in rebounding as Cavs rookie center Chris Mihm suffered a knee injury early in the second quarter and did not return. Murray and Clarence Weatherspoon scored 19 points apiece and Chris Gatling added 18 for Cleveland, which shot 48 percent from the floor (41-of-86) and 83 percent from the line (20-of-24).

Allen Iverson 40pts vs Stephon Marbury 33pts (Nate's Winner)

After playing poorly in the first half, the New York Knicks went with a smaller lineup and came up with their biggest win of the season. A buzzer-beating 3-pointer by 5-foot-9 Nate Robinson lifted the Knicks to a 105-102 overtime victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday. Stephon Marbury scored a season-high 33 points and rookie Channing Frye added 21 points and 11 rebounds for New York, which rallied from a 16-point deficit in the third quarter and then squandered a nine-point lead in the fourth. "We got really aggressive, especially when we went small," Knicks coach Larry Brown said. "We got loose balls, we didn't turn the ball over and we got second shots. We really hurt them on the boards." Allen Iverson had 40 points and 10 assists, and Chris Webber scored 19 points for Philadelphia, which has lost four of five. Webber tipped in Iverson's miss with .6 seconds left to send the game into overtime. The 76ers, who trailed by six in overtime, tied it on Iverson's 3-pointer with 6.2 seconds remaining. The Knicks pushed the ball up the court and Robinson took a 23-foot jumper from the right side just before the buzzer. "I just knew if I get it up high enough I would have a good chance of making it," Robinson said. "So I just shot it hard and let it go." "The sky's the limit for him," Iverson said. "He's a tough guard. He's got the best coach in the world on his side." New York, outplayed in the first half, outhustled and outworked the 76ers for a key 16½-minute stretch in the second half. After Kyle Korver's 3-pointer pushed Philadelphia's lead to 63-47 a minute into the third quarter, New York went on an 18-2 run to tie the game at 65 on Marbury's short jumper with 3:27 remaining in the period. "At halftime, coach got on us because he felt like we had been playing very sloppy," Knicks rookie Channing Frye said. "We got out in the second half and took care of the ball, played some defense and made some shots." Iverson's 20-footer briefly regained the lead for the Sixers before Marbury hit a 3-pointer to give New York its first lead of the game. Marbury's 22-footer increased the Knicks' lead to 70-67 with 1:53 left in the quarter. "They made adjustments," Webber said. "They just played better than we did in the second half. But there's no excuse for a (16-point) lead going down like that. It hurts when you play that well together in the first half, and in the second half you don't do it." New York pushed its lead to 83-74 on Robinson's 3-pointer with more than 5 minutes left in the game. However, Iverson scored 10 points during a 13-4 run to tie the game at 87 with 1:42 left. The Knicks regained the lead 18 seconds later on a goaltending call on Samuel Dalembert, and Jamal Crawford's turnaround jumper with 47 seconds left gave New York an 91-88 lead. Webber's hook shot 12 seconds later made it a one-point game, before Marbury followed with a driving layup to make it 93-90 with 19.9 seconds remaining. "They played better offensively and we did a bad job guarding," Iverson said. "We had a chance to put them away but we have been going through this the last couple of games, having leads and giving them up." Andre Iguodala's two free throws pulled Philadelphia within 93-92 with 10.8 seconds left. Crawford made one free throw with 8.7 seconds left, and Webber's tip sent the game to overtime. Game notes Frye made his first NBA start. ... Penny Hardaway, Matt Barnes, and Jerome James were inactive for the Knicks. ... New York, which had lost three of its previous four, won its second straight at home. ... Dalembert made his season debut after missing the first 11 games with an injured right quadriceps. ... Jamal Mashburn, Louis Williams and Den Gai were inactive for the Sixers. ... Anthony Fedorov, a finalist from last season's "American Idol," sang the national anthem before the game. ... Celebrities in attendance included former tennis star John McEnroe, and actors Edward Norton, Rosario Dawson, Chazz Palminteri and Steve Schirripa.

Allen Iverson 37pts 15 asts vs Pistons 2005 NBA Playoff Gm 3

Allen Iverson was trying to stay with his man on defense when he slammed full-force into Rasheed Wallace and went sprawling to the floor. Picking himself up and shaking off the aftershocks, Iverson came downcourt on Philadelphia's next possession and used a quick dribble and deft stutter-step to drive the lane and draw two defenders, leaving Andre Iguodala open at the 3-point line. Iverson flicked him a pass and Iguodala's shot went in, giving Iverson another of his 15 assists and putting the Sixers ahead by double digits midway through the fourth quarter of a 115-104 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night. "A.I. was phenomenal," said Pistons coach Larry Brown, who was apprehensive beforehand at the prospect of Iverson having a breakout game. Turns out he had good reason to worry. Iverson played one of the better playoff games of his nine-year career, scoring 37 points and handing out five of his 15 assists in the fourth quarter as the Sixers defeated the defending champions for the first time in their best-of-seven series, cutting Detroit's lead to 2-1. Game 4 is Sunday. Iverson led the way as Philadelphia overcame an early 13-point deficit and then played its best ball in the fourth quarter. Detroit center Ben Wallace scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, but the Pistons got only two points from their reserves on a night when they had another 50-percent shooting effort from the field -- the third time in the series they've made at least half their shots. Despite that accuracy, the Pistons couldn't find a way to stop Iverson after holding him to 35-percent shooting in the first two games. He finished 15-for-26 from the field, including 2-for-4 from 3-point range, and his assists were one shy of his career-best. "The same shots he took in Detroit and missed were the same shots he made tonight," Detroit's Richard Hamilton said. "Every game Allen comes out he plays with that demeanor. Since I've been in the league I've never played against him when he's said 'I'm just going to show up." Chauncey Billups started as the primary defender on Iverson, and Hamilton took over the job later in the game. But even when the Pistons managed to get the ball out of Iverson's hands, he was able to find open teammates who were able to knock down shots. Chris Webber scored nine of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, Rodney Rogers added 15 points, Samuel Dalembert had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Iguodala had 13 points and seven steals for Philadelphia, which shot 55 percent. Before the game, Brown said his inside knowledge of Iverson's tendencies from their many seasons together were of no benefit. "From a personal standpoint, when you know what someone like that is capable of, it's not a comfortable feeling," Brown said. "We all know what he does, and I haven't seen anybody stop him. The reason we've been successful is we've stopped other people." Iverson's 15th assist came on a pass to Webber for a jumper that gave Philadelphia a 105-96 lead with 3:04 left, and Iverson sank a 3-pointer with 1:33 remaining to lock up the victory. The game was Brown's first postseason appearance in the building where he coached Iverson for six seasons and took the Sixers to the NBA Finals in 2001 -- the year Iverson won the MVP award. "That doesn't seem like a long time ago. Most of those games I really remember, and he had a remarkable year, but I still think this is his best one." No game was more critical to Philadelphia than this one, and Iverson would not let the 76ers fall into a 3-0 deficit no NBA team has ever overcome. His 37 points eclipsed his career postseason average of 30.4, second in NBA history behind Michael Jordan's 33.4. "This is one game. We've got to feed off it," Iverson said. "We didn't just play defense, we played offense, too." Hamilton scored 24, Tayshaun Prince had 19 and Rasheed Wallace and Billups each scored 15 for Detroit. Philadelphia fell behind by 13 points early in the second quarter, but Detroit's offense struggled when the starters were not on the floor, and Iverson had 17 points and six assists by halftime as the Sixers cut their deficit to 54-51. The Pistons stayed ahead until Rogers hit a corner jumper with 3:41 left in the third quarter for a 72-72 tie, and Rogers added a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute of the quarter to help Philadelphia take an 80-78 lead into the fourth. The 76ers stayed ahead the rest of the way. Game notes Wallace's previous career-high was 22 points against New Orleans on Dec. 4. His previous career-high in the playoffs was 20. ... Sixers coach Jim O'Brien gave an expanded role to Willie Green, who often played in the regular season only when Iverson was hurt. Green, who totaled 9 minutes in the first two games combined, played 19 minutes and scored two points. ... Kyle Korver, who made only two of 11 3-point shots in the first two games, was 3-for-4 from long distance.
